2008 TaLK (TEACH AND LEARN IN KOREA) - Deadline: June 15, 2008

The TaLK (Teach & Learn in Korea) program is inviting four hundred individuals to teach English to students and to experience and learn about Korean culture. Sponsored by the Korean Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, TaLK will sponsor individuals interested in gaining personal and professional enrichment through teaching and learning in Korea. GILMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP - Deadline: April 15, 2008

To be eligible for the Gilman Scholarship students must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application. Founded under the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000 this congressionally-funded program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Institute of International Education. The Gilman Scholarship Program broadens the student population that studies abroad by supporting undergraduates who have been traditionally underrepresented in US study abroad and those with high financial need. The program aims to encourage students to choose non-traditional study abroad destinations, especially those outside of Western Europe and Australia, and aims to support students who have been traditionally underrepresented in study abroad. This includes but is not limited to, students with high financial need, community college students, students in underrepresented fields such as education, the sciences and engineering, students with diverse ethnic backgrounds, students with disabilities, and students of non-traditional age. The program seeks to assist students from a diverse range and type of two-year and four-year public and private institutions from all 50 states.

Students who apply for and receive the Gilman Scholarship to study abroad are now eligible to receive an additional $3,000 Critical Need Language Supplement from the Gilman Program for a total possible award of up to $8,000. 25 Critical Need Language Supplements will be offered to Gilman Scholarship recipients during the 2006-2007 academic year. The Gilman Scholarship provides awards of up to $5,000 for U.S. citizen undergraduate students at two- and four-year institutions to pursue country-based undergraduate opportunities abroad of up to one academic year. To be eligible students must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application and cannot be studying abroad in a country currently under a U.S. Department of State Travel Warning or in Cuba. Short-term programs are eligible provided they are a minimum of four weeks in length. BRIDGING SCHOLARSHIPS - ASSOCIATION OF TEACHERS OF JAPANESE - Deadline: April 7, 2008 for study in Japan beginning in Fall 2008 (single semester or full-year)

The Association of Teachers of Japanese Bridging Project accepts applications from American students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. Funding from private foundations and major U.S. corporations has made it possible for ATJ to award 100 scholarships annually to assist students with the travel and living expenses they will incur while studying abroad in Japan. Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study are eligible to apply for these scholarships. Japanese language study is not a prerequisite. Bridging Scholarship recipients receive a stipend of $2,500 (for students on semester-long programs) or $4,000 (for students on academic year programs). Students attending programs at Japanese four-year universities may also be eligible for a supplementary monthly stipend from the Japanese government through the Association for International Education, Japan (AIEJ). Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and be enrolled in a college or university in the United States. Applications are due in October for the spring semester and in late spring for the fall semester or academic year.

FREEMAN-ASIA AWARDS - Deadline: April 2, 2008 for programs beginning in Fall 2008 (single semester or full-year)

The primary goal of the Freeman-ASIA Program is to increase the number of American undergraduates who study in East and Southeast Asia, by providing students with the information and financial assistance they will need. You must have applied or have been accepted to a country-based study abroad program from among the following countries/regions: Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam. Awardees are expected to share their experiences with their home campus to encourage study abroad by others and to spread understanding of Asia in their home communities. Awards range from $3000 to $7000, depending on the length of study.

Full Scholarship for One Semester of Study at Beijing Normal University (2008-2009) - Deadline: March 26, 2008

To honor President Stephen Knapp's visit last fall, Beijing Normal University (Beijing shifan daxue) has generously offered a full scholarship (covering tuition and room and board) to sponsor one student from GWU to study in their undergraduate academic program, for one semester, either Fall 2008 or Spring 2009. If you wish to be considered for this honor, please submit your application to the BNU Scholarship Search Committee, Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures by 5 PM on Wednesday, March 26, 2008.

Your application should be word-processed and should consist of the following:(Except for personal data, the application should be written in Chinese.)

(1) Personal data: Your name in English and Chinese, current address (postal and electronic mail), telephone number(s), enrollment status, major, typed transcript of your academic record for the past three semesters

(2) Statement of Purpose: Why do you wish to be considered for the honor of representing George Washington University as an exchange student at Beijing Normal University, and, if awarded this honor, how would you make use of the opportunities it affords? (maximum of 800 characters)

(3) Tentative Plan of Study: What would you study for one semester at Beijing Normal University? (maximum of 400 characters)

(4) Supporting Materials: You may submit up to five (5) pieces of writing that you consider representative of your work. These may be writings previously submitted in courses taken at GWU or other academic institutions, or new materials written specifically to support your application. There are no restrictions on length or subject matter, but the materials should enable the reader to assess your level of proficiency in written Chinese, as well as your ability to think creatively and critically and to present your thoughts. You are also invited to submit the results of any Chinese language proficiency tests you may have taken.

Requirements for Application:

Priority will be given to students majoring in Chinese in the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures, but other students are also encouraged to apply. Short-listed candidates will be examined in a brief oral interview (20 minutes). The successful candidate must be enrolled as a full-time student at GWU at the time of receiving the scholarship. He or she may be asked to take the Chinese Proficiency Test (Hanyu shuiping kaoshi or HSK). We will announce the results of this search by Friday, April 18, 2008.

SEJONG SCHOLARSHIP FOR KOREAN LANGUAGE STUDIES - Deadline: March 10, 2008

The Korean Language and Culture Program of the East Asian Languages and Literatures Department is pleased to announce the annual Sejong Scholarship for Korean Language Studies. The award will provide a partial tuition scholarship to a matriculated student enrolled in a Korean language/literature/culture class at The George Washington University.

The selection of the final recipient is based on the following criteria:

1. The recipient must have had no prior substantial experience with Korean language and culture before studying at GW.
2. The recipient must have a long-term interest in Korean studies and/or Korea-related activities.
3. The recipient must provide an exceptional essay in English on reasons for wanting to learn Korean [not to exceed five pages].
4. The recipient must complete a successful interview with the selection committee.
5. Where several candidates meet all of the above, preference will be given to the individual demonstrating the greatest financial need.

KOREAN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE STUDENT PRIZE - Deadline: March 10, 2008

The Korean Language and Culture Program of the East Asian Languages and Literatures Department is pleased to announce the annual Korean Language and Culture Student Prize ($500).

The selection of the final recipient is based on the following criteria:

1. The recipient must be enrolled in at least one Korean language/culture course at George Washington University.
2. The recipient must have had at least three semesters of Korean language studies at George Washington University or have had equivalent course-work elsewhere.
3. The recipient must have a long-term interest in Korean studies and/or in Korea-related activities.
4. Competition will be based on essays in English on Korea-related topics to be chosen by applicants.

JAPANESE STUDIES SCHOLARSHIP - Deadline: March 3, 2008

New applications for the 2008 Japanese Government Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (Monbukagakusho or MEXT) Japanese Studies Scholarship (undergraduate) are now available.

The Japanese Studies Scholarship is a one-year scholarship for undergraduate Japanese/Asian Studies majors and minors to study Japanese at a university in Japan. Details and requirements for these scholarships are available at http://www.atlanta.us.emb-japan.go.jp/monbusho.html.
