From the Chair

Welcome to the home page of the George Washington University Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures. We hope that you will find the introduction we provide helpful to you. If you don't get the information you need, please let us know. We will appreciate any feedback and comments you might wish to offer.

The EALL Department is located within the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences. The majority of our full-time faculty members are also members of the Elliott School of International Affairs. The Department has four sub-components: Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese. We offer both majors and minors in Chinese and Japanese Language and Literature studies, and also a minor in Korean Language and Literature studies. Double majors and minors are possible with other GW schools and departments.

The EALL Department prepares students for significant careers in East-Asian affairs and related fields, by helping them develop leadership qualities through rigorous academic and practical training. The Department also organizes special events for students, faculty members, and friends of GW to promote interdisciplinary and international dialog. Careers in East Asia related fields offer very diverse opportunities in a world in which East Asia plays an increasingly important role. The students in our program go into government, diplomacy, business, academia, intelligence, medicine, and legal profession, etc.

To learn more about our mission, programs of study, courses offered, faculty, student and faculty activities, and special events in the EALL Department, please consult the pertinent sections in the index.

Sincerely,

Young-Key Kim-Renaud
