GW Division of Development and Alumni Relations Names John Kudless as Associate Vice President for Principal Gifts

WASHINGTON – The George Washington University has announced that John W. Kudless has been appointed Associate Vice President for Principal Gifts. He assumed his new position Aug. 1.

“I am delighted to welcome John to the University and to the Division,” said Vice President Laurel Price Jones. “John brings an exceptional depth of experience to GW that will help us to achieve the University’s goals. He built the principal gifts program at Johns Hopkins and so will be key to our success in the coming years.”

Kudless joins GW after serving since 1999 as Senior Executive Vice President and Managing Director of Grenzebach Glier and Associates. The Chicago-based company is one of the nation’s preeminent philanthropic management consulting firms serving higher education institutions and cultural organizations. Kudless provided a leadership role at the firm, which conducts fundraising capacity studies, provides management consultancy, and staff training. During his eight-year tenure with the Grenzebach, he served on the firm’s Executive Management Committee and developed client partnerships with leading university-based medical schools, prestigious private colleges and highly ranked universities.

In a career spanning more than 30 years, Kudless served as Executive Director of Principal Gifts at the Johns Hopkins Institutions; as Vice President of Development and Alumni Relations at Georgetown University; and as Vice President for Advancement at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va.

“I look forward to joining the dynamic and growing Development Division at The George Washington University,” said Kudless. “I am excited to work with the new President, Steven Knapp, and with Vice President Price Jones to build a strong principal gifts program that will support the University’s philanthropic goals. GW has tremendous potential to engage the larger community of alumni, parents, and friends to enhance research and learning through philanthropic support.”

Kudless holds a B.A. in political science from Northeastern University in Boston, and earned an M.A. in comparative politics from The American University in Washington, D.C.
