22,000 alumni, students, parents, friends, corporations, and foundations, GW secured a record $89 million—$98 million when the whole of a $10 million matching pledge from the Smith and Kogod families is included—in gifts and commitments during the 2008 fiscal year. The total surpasses the previous year's record of $81 million.

GW Alumnus and Trustee David Bruce Smith Funds New Course on Contemporary Jewish American Literature to Create a "Uniquely GW Experience"
A new course on contemporary Jewish American works of literature has debuted at The George Washington University this spring thanks to a significant gift from David Bruce Smith, B.A. '79, a member of the University's Board of Trustees. The gift is funding "Literature Live," a unique class within the Department of English that allows students to study and interact with prominent Jewish American authors. Renowned writer and GW professor Faye Moskowitz teaches the course.

GW Receives $1 Million Gift from Kuwait in Support of Institute for Middle East Studies
The State of Kuwait, through the generosity of the Amir His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, has presented The George Washington University with a $1,050,000 gift in support of the Institute for Middle East Studies at the Elliott School of International Affairs.

James Howard Named Assistant Vice President for Development for GW School of Engineering and Applied Science
James P. Howard has been named assistant vice president for development at The George Washington University School of Engineering and Applied Science. He comes to GW from Oberlin College, where he served as director of principal gifts.

New Designs for Alumni Website and the Colonial Cable
The GW Alumni website and Colonial Cable eNewsletter were redesigned in September 2008. The goals of the redesign were to improve usability and functionality, make the site and newsletter more timely and interactive, tell personal stories of alumni engagement, and paint a picture of GW today. We received valuable input and feedback from many alumni during the course of this redesign project. We thank you for your support.

Heritage Society Tea 2008
On December 12, 2008, 68 Heritage Society members, GW faculty and staff joined President Steven Knapp and Diane Robinson Knapp at the Heritage Society Holiday Tea at the Four Season in Georgetown. The tea is held each December to thank members for their generous planned gifts to support GW and to celebrate the holiday season.

2008 Basketball Reception and Game
Members of the L'Enfant Society, 1821 Benefactors, George Washington Society, and Tempietto Circle of the Heritage Society gathered on December 2, 2008 in the Media and Public Affairs Building to celebrate GW athletics. The reception was hosted by Board of Trustees Chair W. Russell Ramsey and Norma Ramsey and President Steven Knapp and Diane Robinson Knapp. Following the reception, guests helped cheer on the GW Lady Colonials versus the 2008 NCAA Champs Tennessee Lady Vols at the game held in the Charles E. Smith Center.
