2008 Science of Science Policy (SoSP) Workshop

Dec 3-4, at the Center for Center for International Science and Technology Policy (CISTP)
George Washington University, Washington DC

“The Science of Science Policy(SoSP): A Federal Research Roadmap”, was developed in response to Dr. John H. Marburger’s challenge for a new “science of science policy” to address the need for better tools, methods, and data for improving our understanding of the efficacy and impact of science and technology policy decisions. This workshop’s goals are to (1) Solicit and receive feedback on the Roadmap (primarily to identify if anything is missing), (2) Identify the highest value investments and actions to answer the questions laid out in the Roadmap, and (3) Identify action steps and an implementation plan to develop these investments.

The workshop was successfully held on December 3 & 4, 2008 at CISTP, the George Washington University. More than 300 policymakers, analysts, scholars and engineers participated in the discussion. There are four themes in the workshop, including, (1) Understanding Science and Innovation, (2) Investing in Science and Innovation, (3) Using the Science of Science Policy to Address National Priorities, and (4) Identifying Data Needs for Implementing SoSP.

Dr. Nicholas S. Vonortas was the facilitator of the discussion on investments in Science and Innovation.
