Health Communication: Polio Lessons LearnedThe effort to eradicate polio has been one of the largest global health initiatives in history. Strong communication programming has been at the heart of its success, just as poor attention to communication has been behind some of its greatest setbacks. This event, co-organised by USAID, The Communication Initiative, George Washington University, and The American Public Health Association, will be a day of presentations and discussion between health communicators, practitioners, researchers, and policymakers to jointly explore key lessons the polio experience offers for the field of health communication. The day will see presentations providing an overview of the use of communication in the effort to eradicate polio, insight into the front line experience of polio workers, how field and surveillance data has been used to inform and plan communication intervention, the role of social mobilisation and community involvement, case studies on sophisticated communication responses to programmes, and analysis of the advocacy efforts that have been necessary to keep polio on the global funding and policy agenda. Expert presenters will discuss their thoughts and findings with the audience. Many of the presentations will be based on initial findings of research to be published later in the year, along with a summary of the key themes and points raised during this meeting. The researchers will incorporate relevant points and perspectives raised during the day's discussion.
