The George Washington University Department of Global Health partners with The Moi University School of Public Health (MUSPH) and the Academic Model for Providing Access to Healthcare (AMPATH) collaboration located in Eldoret.
About Moi University School of Public Health
Formerly part of the Moi Unviersity Medical School, the School of Public Health (SPH) was established in 1998 in recognition of the need for training high level manpower in Public Health. The training programmes of the School have been developed to meet the University's mission of producing skilled and practical health professionals who will contribute to the realization of the country's national goals. The School of Public Health provides advanced and interdisciplinary training for a range of health personnel, including policy makers, medical practitioners, academicians and researchers and serves a leading role in the training of public health personnel locally. Moi University School of Public Health is a regional and international centre for excellence in training, research, practice and consultancy in public health. MUSPH offers a bachelors degree program in environmental health, a Master of Public Health program, and is in the process of developing additional advanced degrees in public health. MUSPH has three departments: Epidemiology and Nutrition, Health Management and Environmental Health.
About AMPATH
The Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare (AMPATH) is Kenya's most comprehensive initiative to combat HIV. AMPATH was established to address the growing prevention and treatment needs among HIV/AIDS affected populations in both rural and urban settings in Kenya. Since the original partnership between Moi University and Indiana University began in 1989, AMPATH has grown to include the participation of a consortium of North American universities including Brown University, Duke University, the University of Toronto, University of Utah, and Yale University. More recently the partnership has broadened its focus to address a range of critical health issues including reproductive health, child health and nutrition, malaria control, and behavior change communication.
AMPATH is a working model of urban and rural HIV preventive and treatment services in the public sector. AMPATH cares for more than 55,000 HIV infected adults and children, with nearly one-half of all patients on anti-retroviral drugs, and enrollment into the program rising by 2,000 patients per month. A robust program to prevent mother to child transmission of HIV has been initiated including an opt-out testing policy and programs fostering triple anti-retroviral therapy of pregnant woman and formula feeding of newborns. AMPATH has implemented programs that foster food and economic security for HIV infected persons and their families. AMPATH demonstrates the power of US and African academic medical centers united by common vision.
Longer-term goals with Moi University SPH include conducting research on the epidemiologic, demographic and ethnographic profile of the 2 million person catchment area in which AMPATH currently operates. It is expected that this research will form the foundation for further collaboration and development of behavior change communications programs.
