Department of Global Health Welcomes New Faculty, New Space

New offices and eight new faculty members are just some of the exciting changes taking place in 2009 at the Department of Global Health.  Our new offices are located at 2175 K St. NW, Suite 200. After more than a year of recruitments, the Department of Global Health welcomes eight new faculty members, including our first faculty member to be based in East Africa. Learn more about them and some of the research now taking place through the Center for Global health as we expand to meet the needs of our students and the broader community.  

Dr. Jon Kim Andrus, MD
Professor of Global Health
Dr. Andrus' expertise is in primary care and immunization programs, working on the global polio eradication initiative in Latin America, Africa and South Asia. He will coordinate the MPH concentration in Global Health Program Design, Monitoring and Evaluation.

Dr. Sarah Baird, PhD
Assistant Professor of Global Health
Dr. Baird is a development economist whose work focuses on issues of health and risk and program evaluation.  She will be involved in the Global Health Methods and Policy Methods courses.

Dr. Barbara A. DeBuono, MD, MPH
Visiting Professor of Health Services Management and Leadership and of Global Health
Dr. DeBuono's interests lie in the intersection between public health theory and practice, health policy and health finance. Her expertise includes health literacy, prevention, health policy, public health leadership and practice, HIV and sexually transmitted diseases.

Dr. Tilly Gurman, PhD
Assistant Professor of Global Health
Dr. Gurman's interest and expertise is in health communication in both international and domestic settings. She has extensive experience in applying health communication theories to promote health behavior change and will work closely with students pursuing MPH concentrations in Global Health Communication.

Dr. Sangeeta Mookherji, PhD
Assistant Professor of Global Health
Dr. Mookherji's international health expertise centers on health economics, budget and sustainability analysis, management systems, program evaluation in urban and community settings.

Wendy O'Meara, PhD
Assistant Professor of Global Health
Dr. O'Meara's research focuses on translating research data into tools for evidence-based public health planning, malaria diagnosis and rational drug use. Dr. O’Meara is based in El Doret, Kenya.

Anne Peterson, MD, MPH
Research Professor
Dr. Peterson has an extensive background in both U.S. and international public health and medical practice.  She has served as the Director of Global Health with World Vision; the Assistant Administrator for USAID Bureau for Global Health; and the Commissioner of Health for the State of Virginia.  

Elanah Uretsky, PhD, MA
Dr. Uretsky's expertise is in HIV and East Asia. A GW alumna, Uretsky will advise students pursuing dual master's degrees in Public Health and International Development Studies in the Elliott School of International Affairs.
