GW Grand Rounds hosts Ambassador Michel Kazatchkine, Executive Director, Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria
The upcoming year provides enormous opportunities for the international community to succeed or fail in the fight against AIDS, said Dr. Michel Kazatchkine, Executive Director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
Speaking at Grand Rounds at the George Washington University Hospital last week, Kazatchkine challenged university students, faculty, and the broader global health community to get involved.
“No one can fight this epidemic alone,” Kazatchkine said. “We’ve learned that we have to fight this together.”
While advances in research, emphasis on both the prevention and treatment of AIDS, and increases in political commitment and investments have produced significant gains in recent years, Kazatchkine said inequalities between and within countries are increasing, and the lack of access to health care is the most striking and immediate inequity in the world today.
To ensure that the financial crisis does not further exacerbate the inequalities in the world and to reaffirm the Millennium Development Goals, Kazatchkine called for ambitious commitments and vision.
“It is time to ensure the gains we have made in global health since 2001 are not lost,” he said.
Now in its third year, Public Health Grand Rounds lecture series focuses on innovative leadership strategies that address present and evolving public health challenges. The monthly series features prominent public health practitioners, and is open to the Medical Center, the University, and all those within the public health and healthcare communities.
