WILLIAM F. WATERS, PhD
William F. Waters is a Senior Associate for the Center for Global Health and an Associate Professor of Global Health and International Affairs. After obtaining his doctorate in Development Sociology from Cornell University, he worked as a consultant in rural development project design, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation. Before coming to Washington, Dr. Waters was Dean of the School of Development Administration and later Dean of the School of Social Sciences and Humanities at the Universidad San Francisco de Quito (Ecuador).
The work of Dr. Waters centers on the relationship between health and development; participatory, community-based research and capacity building; the impact of globalization on local populations; indigenous peoples; health in the U.S. Latino community; and qualitative and quantitative research methods. His recent work includes: a three-year field-based study of the impact of changing land use patterns and ethnicity on the environment and local health and food consumption patterns in the upper Amazon region of Ecuador, Colombia, and Venezuela; applied research in Latin America and East Africa on relationships between microenterprise development and health; and health in the Latino community in the Washington, DC metropolitan area.
Dr. Waters teaches graduate level courses in project development and evaluation, qualitative research methods, and regional studies concentrating on health issues in Latin America and the Caribbean. Dr. Waters received his B.A. from Union College. Dr. Waters hold a Master’s and a Ph.D. in Development Sociology from Cornell University.
