ELIOT SOREL, MD, DFAPA

Dr. Eliot Sorel is a Clinical Professor of the Departments of Global Health and Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.  He is an internationally recognized leader in psychiatric medicine, as a scholar, educator, practicing physician, and consultant. 

Dr. Sorel has substantial experience in global health care systems in over 20 countries in both the private and public sectors.  His areas of expertise include: the integration of primary care and psychiatric medicine; mood disorders and disorders related to traumatic events; conflict management, violence prevention, and the healing of trauma; and health care policy - quality, financing, and patients’ rights. 

Dr. Sorel is a Fellow of the American College of Psychiatrists, the Pacific Rim College of Psychiatrists, and Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. 
Dr. Sorel is chairman of the Board of the World Association for Social Psychiatry and is chair of the Scientific Committee, Brain, Behavior, and Molecules in Social Contexts, the First African Regional Congress of Social Psychiatry.

Dr. Sorel was recently decorated with the Star of Romania, Order of Commander, by the President of Romania, Ion Iliescu, in recognition of his merits and contributions to Romania and Romanian culture, science, and medicine.  He was also presented with the Exemplary Psychiatrist Award by the U.S. National Alliance for the Mentally Ill.

Some of Dr. Sorel’s recent publications include: “Family Violence: Medical, Psychological, and Sexual Consequences” in Exit Out of the Desert and “Violence Prevention and the Healing of Trauma” in Advances in Psychiatry.

Dr. Sorel teaches a graduate course entitled “International Mental Health” with the Department.  Dr. Sorel received his B.A. degree from the New York University and holds his Doctor of Medicine from New York State University.  He received his psychiatric training from Yale University.
