BERNARD BUCHER, MB, PhD
Dr. Bucher trained in General Medicine at the French State University of the Antilles-Guyane School of Medicine. As an undergraduate he developed foundation sin immunology with an emphasis on immunodeficiency and cancer. He received an interdisciplinary education at the graduate level, focusing on immunopathology, neuroimmunology, virology and epidemiology. He has studied both human and animal normal and diseased states through the monitoring of in vivo and in vitro humoral and cellular immunity, the isolation of human viruses, clinical pathology, and necropsy investigations.
Dr. Bucher’s professional career has included research and academic positions in medical centers and universities in the Martinique and the United States. He also has many years of experience in consulting. His current interests include the study of epidemiology, clinical aspects, and immunopathology of dengue fever and other select infectious diseases associated with travel. He is an active member of many professional societies in the Americas and Europe. He served for nine years as Chair of the International Membership Committee for the American Society for Microbiology and Europe, and is presently a member of the Public Policy Committee of the International Union of Microbiological Societies.
Dr. Bernard Bucher is the current President of the Centre International pour la Coopération Médicale et Sanitaire dans la Caraïbe et les Amériques (CICOMSCA) and a Senior Researcher at the Fort-de-France University Medical Center and part-time faculty at the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers Branch in Martinique. He is also an Adjunct Associate Professor of Global Health at the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services in Washington, D.C. (U.S.A.). He is the author of several medical and scientific collaborative articles, book chapters and international presentations; he has experience in the surveillance and control of communicable diseases in populations and in the design, conduct, and analysis of infectious disease epidemiological and laboratory studies.
