CHINUA AKUKWE, MD, MPH
Dr. Chinua Akukwe is an Adjunct Associate Professor of the Departments of Global Health and Prevention and Community Health. Dr. Akukwe has extensive experience in HIV/AIDS and development in Africa, Maternal and Child Health (MCH), and Community Oriented Primary Care (COPC), both in the U.S. and abroad.
Dr. Akukwe is the former Vice Chairman of the National Council for International Health (NCIH), now known as the Global Health Council. He also served as the Chair of the NCIH strategic planning committee that initiated its transformation to the Global Health Council. Dr. Akukwe is a former Senior Policy Advisor to the Director of Health, Washington, D.C. Department of Health. Under the National Institutes of Health, he served as a Scientific Coordinator of the Initiative to Reduce Infant Mortality in D.C., mandated by the U.S. Congress.
Dr. Akukwe is a consultant in the areas of HIV/AIDS strategies, policies and programs in Africa and of MCH issues in the U.S. He is also a member of the Board of the Constituency for Africa, with a principal focus on HIV/AIDS in Africa. Since 1995,
Dr. Akukwe has served on the National Expert Review Panels for MCH programs for the Department of Health and Human Services. Dr. Akukwe is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine in London and a member of the American College of Epidemiology. Dr. Akukwe is a former member of the editorial board of the American Journal of Public Health.
Dr. Akukwe teaches a graduate course on politics, governance, and HIV/AIDS in Africa. Dr. Akukwe received his B.A. degree and his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital. In addition, he holds a Master’s degree in Public Health from the Hebrew University School of Public Health and Community Medicine, Jerusalem, Israel.
