BackgroundThe Center for International Health was created in 1992 in order to provide a focal point for international health and development activities at the George Washington University. The Center for International Health was renamed the Center for Global Health (CGH) in 2002, to take into account the extent to which health concerns have become global in nature and often require policy-oriented, global solutions. Since its inception, the Center has focused on the interaction between health and development. Thus CGH training, research, and field projects address health issues through a multidisciplinary approach that integrates economic, social, political, cultural, biological, and epidemiological aspects of health. The Center is linked to the Department of Global Health and works closely with other departments of the School of Public Health and Health Services, the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, and the Elliott School of International Affairs, among others. In addition, the Center has enjoyed collaborative relationships with a broad array of private, governmental, non-governmental, and international agencies that are actively involved in global health and development issues. In 1995, the Center was named a Collaborating Center on Health and Development by the World Health Organization. |
