Education Specialist (EdS) Degree in Counseling

The Mission

The EdS program in counseling is designed to prepare knowledgeable and skilled students to become leaders, practitioners and researchers for the field of professional counseling. The program includes classroom, laboratory and internship experiences that develop competency in advanced counseling practice, counseling research and program evaluation. The program is interdisciplinary, allowing the student to draw from courses in allied fields, such as psychology, art therapy, health care administration, human resource development, special education and educational leadership. The faculty includes nationally known scholars and researchers as well as highly experienced practitioners.

The EdS is an individualized advanced graduate degree consisting of a minimum of 30 semester hour credits beyond a 48 semester hour master's degree in counseling.

Program of Study and Degree Requirements

Individual programs are developed, through a plan of study worked out with a faculty advisor, to fit the candidate’s skills, interests and career goals. A minimum of 30 credit hours beyond the requirements of the degree of master of arts in education and human development is required. At least 21 hours of this work must be taken in residence at GW. A maximum of five calendar years is allowed for completion of the program. At least 12 of the required 30 hours must be in appropriate graduate courses in education selected from the following areas: (1) foundations and cognate study, (2) background and principles of the field of study, (3) an area of specialization. A graduate level research methods course must be included in the program if it was not completed in previous graduate work.
