Senior Executive Development Program Curriculum

The Senior Executive Development (SED) program balances theory and practical exercises to help you develop a leadership philosophy for meeting the real-world challenges you face. Our faculty will guide you through cutting-edge public and private sector best practices to help you broaden the skills, knowledge, and personal qualities vital to effective executive leadership.

To complete the program’s required 80 hours of class time, participants meet two days a week for five weeks in either the fall or spring. Download a brochure on the SED Program.

The SED program’s curriculum is shaped by the Office of Personnel Management's latest Executive Core Qualifications for SES candidates. Download a sample workshop schedule. Program topics include:

ECQ 1: Leading Change
Leadership Competencies: continual learning, creativity, and innovation; external awareness, flexibility, and resilience; service motivation; strategic thinking and vision.

ECQ 2: Leading People
Leadership Competencies: conflict management, cultural awareness, integrity/honesty, and team building.

ECQ 3: Driving Results
Leadership Competencies: accountability, customer service, decisiveness, entrepreneurship, problem solving, and technical credibility.

ECQ 4: Business Acumen
Leadership Competencies: financial management, human resource management, and technology management.

ECQ 5: Building Coalitions/Communication
Leadership Competencies: influencing/negotiating, interpersonal skills, oral communication, partnering, political savvy, and written communication.
