Parent Leadership Development Institute

The Parent Leadership Development Institute (PLDI) is a partnership program of the Fight for Children Foundation, DC Children’s Youth Investment Trust Corporation, and The George Washington University Center for Excellence in Public Leadership. Its mission is to train parent/caregiver leaders who will make a positive difference in the education of children in the District of Columbia.

Parent/caregiver leaders are trained to:

  • Actively and effectively support the academic achievement of the children under their care.
  • Interact assertively, effectively, and proactively with school personnel and others in support of the learning, development, and academic achievement of children.
  • Inspire, organize, and encourage the active participation of parents/caregivers and community members to address common school-level or multi-school level issues and to be proactive in taking advantage of educational opportunities for children.
  • Understand all aspects of the instructional system of public, charter, and private schools, such as the curriculum, testing procedures, opportunities for parental involvement, and school and community provided learning support services.
  • Develop their leadership capabilities, including skills such as leading meetings, making effective presentations, and managing projects.
  • Become increasingly proactive, effective, and empowered in living and enhancing their own lives and accomplishing life goals that are important to them.
