District of Columbia Neighborhood College The Center for Excellence in Public Leadership hold periodic events to help graduates of its program continue building their skills as well as to provide networking opportunities. Upcoming Events How the District of Columbia Government Works This course focuses on how the District government functions and how it interfaces with the federal government. The purpose of this course is to provide participants with a general knowledge of public systems as well as plans and strategies that influence key stakeholders, policy and decision-making. Plans are underway to make this course available to alumni for a more in-depth look into the History of the District of Columbia Government. Previous Events Grant Training Workshop In May 2009, 25 DC Neighborhood College Alumni participated in a Grant Training Workshop designed to teach participants how to develop, prepare and write successful grant proposals. Community Benefits Symposium This symposium, held in Spetember 2008 was designed in collaboration with the Washington Regional Equity Network to discuss the utilization of Community Benefits Agreement’s (CBA’s) as a planning tool for development. The symposium had two panels – the first panel featured Carol Naughton of the Eastlake Foundation in Atlanta, Georgia and the second panel discussed the potential for local utilization of CBA’s as the District of Columbia plans for the future. The event brought together over 90 civic leaders, developers, city government employees, and national leaders to discuss the complex issue of CBA’s and the value they bring to the Washington region as it plans for the future. This topic was of particular interest to the Neighborhood College as many of the District’s civic leaders negotiate with developers and city officials regarding benefits agreements for their neighborhoods.
