Senator Joseph Lieberman (D- CT), the moral voice of the Senate, has confirmed that he will
address the Communitarian Summit in February. He joins a long and distinguished list

Dr. Amitai Etzioni, who was born in Germany, will return there on November 9 to speak at St.
Paul's Church in Frankfurt to mark the 60th anniversary of Kristallnacht, the Night of
Broken Glass. He will speak about collective guilt and repentance on this anniversary
of the night which signaled the beginning of the Holocaust.
"Rights for Gangs, Handcuffs for Neighborhoods" by Roger Conner
"Liberty, Community, and the Framers' Intent", JoEllen Lind answers the question of
whether the Framers of the U.S. Constitution were individualists or republican
virtuists, and whether that is a relevant question to ask.
"Esteeming the 'Responsible' Self", James L. Nolan examines whether self-esteem
and responsibility can live together.
"Beyond Self-Interest: Why People Obey Laws and Accept Judicial Decisions", Tom
R. Tyler shows that the idea of procedural justice may be as important to people
as the substance of the verdict.
"Europe: Economic Union May Not Be Enough" by Gerard Lyons. Can an economic
union in Europe survive without political unification?

Update of the Louisiana Covenant Marriage Law
Discussion of Responsive Democracy and Changing Social Policy at the Wilson Center
Panel this Friday afternoon, October 23 at 3:00, with Hugh Heclo and C. Eugene Steuerle, the
authors of The Government We Deserve: Responsive Democracy and Changing Expectations. Alan

Walk or Talk for the Homeless
Walkers are needed for the Help the Homeless Walk-a-thon on Saturday, November 21. It is a
3-mile walk around the National Mall. Proceeds will benefit the Homeless Breakfast
Program at St. Margaret's Church, as well as many other homeless service programs.
Volunteers are also needed for phone calling. For more information, or to register,
