The interdisciplinary doctoral programs in the biomedical sciences are organized within the Institute for Biomedical Sciences. Three interdisciplinary programs are offered, one of which is selected by the student as a field of study: Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics, Microbiology and Immunology, and Molecular Medicine.
Students are prepared for careers in research and teaching through an integrated program taught by faculty from Columbian College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, including scientists from the Children's National Medical Center and the National Institutes of Health. A core curriculum during the first year covers macromolecular interactions of proteins and nucleic acids, cell biology, developmental biology, immunology, neurobiology, and metabolism. Laboratory rotations enable students to become more familiar with research techniques, scientific communication, and potential dissertation research projects. Faculty research interests cover a broad range of subjects, including molecular biology, bioenergetics, membrane biochemistry, developmental and molecular genetics, developmental neurobiology, mechanisms of drug action, neurotransmitters, immunology, regulation of gene transcription virology, and vascular biology. |
