American Studies offers broad interdisciplinary training in cultural history, with concentrations in museums and material culture, folklife, and historic preservation. At the doctoral level, students focus their work in four fields of research, with American cultural history and the cultural theory recommended. The others are chosen from such possibilities as history, literature, philosophy, art, religion, women's studies, and several other fields within the social sciences.

The American Studies department maintains close affiliations with the Smithsonian Institution, the National Park Service, and other local cultural resource management institutions, using their staffs and resources as a regular part of its curriculum and for internship opportunities.
