Columbian College Mission Statement

The mission of the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences is to advance knowledge and enhance excellence through a focus on research, teaching, and advising, and service to the institution and professions. Through a student-faculty partnership in discovery and learning, the College promotes the spirit of life long learning and inquiry.

The Columbian College serves as the intellectual core of the University and supports an academic community centered around themes that sweep across the College including the American experience, health and medicine, evolution, materials and trace analysis, nuclear studies, policy studies, the urban experience, environment, literary inquiry, the plastic and expressive arts, ethical responsibility and spirituality.

Teaching methodologies that embrace technological and pedagogical developments enable students and faculty in partnership to examine the key areas of the liberal arts, developing students with core competences who are engaged and focused, involved in discovery, and linked to the full intellectual experience of GW.

Columbian College faculty are visible at the highest levels of research, scholarship, creative productivity, and public service, contributing to GW's excellence in the creation, dissemination, and application of knowledge.
