and Day Music- swing, jazz, blues, motown. They are a seven-piece
group and music clips and song lists are at their website.
Hotel Information:
- We have reserved blocks of rooms at two hotels located close
to the wedding and reception sites. If interested in these locations,
please mention
- 'Cahill-Taylor' party for these rates.
-
- 1. The Jury's Hotel:
1500 New Hampshire Ave. NW. Washington DC 20036. Phone: (202)483-6000.
- We have 10 rooms reserved for the nights of 11/5 and 11/6.
The rate is $125/night +14.5% Room Tax. Parking is available
at $20/night.
- Make reservations by October 6, 2004.
- Comments on this location: Easiest access to the WNDC- it
is on the same block and side of street as the WNDC. Decent restaurant
and bar that are hugely
- popular on weekend nights (see comments on Westin, below).Very
close to Metro, DuPont restaurants etc etc.
-
- 2. Westin
Embassy Row. 2100 Massachusetts Ave, NW Washington, DC 20008.
Phone: (202)293-2100.
- We have 20 rooms reserved here for the nights of 11/5 and
11/6. The rate is $169/night + Tax. Parking is $28/night.
- Make reservations by October 6, 2004.
- Comments on this location: This is where we are staying.
It is a short (safe!) walk to the WNDC- just across DuPont circle-
map below. This is also where
- we will hold a post-reception party. The bar/restaurant is
very nice, quiet and off the beaten path. Hence it is much easier
to show up at this place with a crowd and take the place over.
Food is limited here so eat up at the reception and we'll probably
order a bunch of pizzas late in the evening. The after hours
party will be non-smoking.
-
- 3. Hilton
Garden Inn @ Arlington/Courthouse: 1333 N. Courthouse Rd.,
Arlington, VA 22201. Phone: (703)-528-4444. No rooms reserved.
- Rates are $79/night + Tax (lower rate in VA) and free parking.
This is a great place and a great value- right up the block from
where we live and very close to the Metro. Slight drawback- you
will need to get to the ceremony/reception. This will involve
a 20-30 minute Metro ride and 5-6 block walk, or a 10 minute
cab ride at $15 each way.
-
Getting around and travel tips:
-
- 1. How to get here.
- a. Fly into National Airport (code = DCA). This is the EASIEST
airport to get to. Quick cab-ride to above hotels, very close
to our house and Metro accesible. We may be able to pick you
up depending on when you arrive. The
webite is here- hub for USAIR.
- b. Fly into Dulles International (code = IAD). This is way
the heck out there, but do-able. Getting to Arlington or downtown
will not be cheap or easy.
- c. Fly into Baltimore-Washington International (BWI). . Same
comments as for Dulles. Directions to downtown DC via train/metro
can be found
here
- In b and c, cheap flights may influence your decision- please
call us for a consult.
-
- d. Train to Union Station in downtown DC and then cabs/Metro
to wherever you are staying.
- e. Drive. Plan on parking your car at your hotel and leaving
it for the duration. We also have a limited number of FREE parking
spots associated with our
- condo in Arlington. Call for details.
-
- Detailed Driving directions can be found here.
-
- 2. How to get around once you are here:
- a. Do not drive.
- b. Do not drive.
- c. Do not drive.
- d. Do not rent a car (unless you have some reason to leave
town).
- e. Metro: This is DC's version of the subway.
- f. Cabs- cheap.
- g. Walk- everything is close.
-
- Bottom line here is that mass transit or cabs are the way
to go in DC. All the hotels listed above are very close to the
Metro- which is, by the way, DC's
- version of the Subway. It is cleans, safe and reliable. It
goes everywhere you need to be and will save you serious fromheadaches
if you try to drive around town.
- Some more details on the Metro can be found at their website. Each ride in one direction
is $1.35. You can buy a one-day pass for $5.00 and hit the whole
city
- in no time. If you poke around on the Metro website and have
a look at the map,
WNDC and hotels #1 and #2 are at the DuPont Circle Station on
the Red line.
- Hotel #3, as well as our place is at the Courthouse Station
on the Orange
line.
-
Fun things to do while in DC:
- 1. Check out the museums- most are FREE (your tax dollars
at work). Other listings can be found by 'googling' DC museums.
-
- 2. Check out the monuments- the National Mall is a fantastic
place. The monuments are spread out a bit, so you will need some
transportation if you plan to
- hit a bunch. They are not very Metro friendly. The way to
do this is thus to take an Old
Town Trolley.
-
- 3. Take a Historic
Tour.
-
- 4. Walk around- it is a safe and fun city.
-
- 5. Aviation/space enthusiasts will not want to miss the new
Udvar-Hazy
center as part of the National
Air and Space Museum. This is out by Dulles airport (i.e.
NOT downtown), yet a shuttle from the downtown museum is available.
This is a must see if you are into this sort of thing.
-
- 6. You cannot go to the White House and get a tour. You can
look at it and take pics.
-
- 7. Call your Congressperson NOW and see if you can arrange
a Capitol Building Tour. This is great- much better to have your
representative set it up.
-
- 8. Go to the Kennedy
Center's Millenium Stage- Free performances daily.
-
Weather
- It will likely be cool on/around November 6- by cool, we
mean long sleeved shirt and light jacket weather. Of course that
could change and be freezing, or in the
- 80s. Checkout weather.com
and put in the zipcode of your hotel.
-
Newspapers
-
- Washington Post-
THE newspaper.
-
- Washington
CityPaper- the source for entertainment happenings etc. Comprehensive
club/restaurant listings etc.
-
