Constituting a Cause for Celebration

The George Washington University commemorated Constitution Day 2005 with a colloquium on constitutional law. Law School Dean Frederick M. Lawrence, right, and Ira C. Lupu, GW’s F. Elwood and Eleanor Davis Professor of Law, led the discussion. Constitution Day is officially recognized on Sept. 17, marking the anniversary of the Philadelphia Convention in 1787, when delegates completed and signed the US Constitution. Senator Robert Byrd (D–WV) accomplished a long-standing goal Dec. 8, 2004, passing a law designating the day as Constitution Day. Schools and federal agencies are required to hold educational programs about the Constitution on Constitution Day.
