Women Look to Bounce Back to NCAA Tournament
Even though the womens basketball team posted a 219 record
last year and finished the Atlantic 10 regular season at 151,
the team is hungry to return to the NCAA Tournament, which it missed
last season. Head Coach Joe McKeown and all five starters return to
make up a formidable team. The Colonials have a history of competing
in the NCAA Tournament; they have been a part of the post-season parade
in nine of the last 14 seasons.
GW boasts an award-winning lineup this year with four returnees who
received conference accolades in 2001-02. Cathy Joens and Ugo Oha earned
A-10 Conference First Team honors; Lindsey Davidson was named the Sixth
Player of the Year; and Anna Montañana was tapped for the All-Rookie
Team. Oha had a sensational sophomore season as she scored 13.1 points
per game and averaged 2.9 blocks a contest. Her 86 blocks were more
than the totals of eight conference teams. Ohas efforts earned
her the A-10 Defensive Player of the Year.
Joens, Davidson, and Erica Lawrence represent the senior leadership
for McKeowns team. Joens averaged just over 15 points a game and
led the league in three-point field goal percentage. Davidson led the
Colonials in assists and steals last season and she will anchor the
backcourt this season. Lawrence, who has netted more than 1,000 points
in her GW career, will play a key role as one of the teams forwards.
The schedule for the women includes these key games:
Nov. 22 vs Howard
Nov. 26 at Tennessee
Dec. 1 vs Virginia Commonwealth
Dec. 11 vs BYU
Dec. 20 vs George Mason
Dec. 22 at DePaul
Dec. 29 at Rutgers
Womens season ticket prices are $100 for the season, $50 with
purchase of the mens season. Individual game tickets are $9 and
$6.
Men Continue Building the Basketball
Basics
Head Coach Karl Hobbs begins his second season at Foggy Bottom by returning
to his past. The first game for the Colonials this year is against Hobbs
alma mater and former employer, the University of Connecticut, on Nov.
25. Hobbs spent eight seasons as assistant coach in Storrs, CT, and
he will be looking to capture some of that magic to infuse his young
team.
The Colonials will return top scorer Chris Monroe, a second-team All-Atlantic
10 selection whose 21.1 points per game was third-highest in the league
and 23rd nationally. He returns for his final season at GW as the teams
cornerstone, someone Hobbs is looking to for leadership. He is equally
capable of taking the ball strong to the basket or stepping back and
hitting a three-point shot.
Joining Monroe as scoring threats are Greg Collucci and T.J. Thompson.
Collucci hit 77 of 258 field goals from behind the arc last year, while
Thompson was named to the A-10 All-Rookie team for his 9.8 points a
game and 4.2 assists.
This years schedule will pit GW against some of the elite teams
in the country, as well as the full complement of A-10 schools. GW will
host two tournaments this year The Red Auerbach Colonial Classic
(at the Smith Center) and the BB&T Classic (at the MCI Center).
Early season highlights of the schedule include:
Nov. 25 at Connecticut
Nov. 29 vs Mount St. Marys (Colonial Classic)
Nov. 30 vs Bucknell or Columbia (Colonial Classic)
Dec. 7 vs Texas (BB&T Classic)
Dec. 8 vs Maryland or Notre Dame (BB&T Classic)
Dec. 28 vs Old Dominion
Jan. 2 at American
Mens season ticket prices range from the $195 Gold Seats
(regularly $240), that include tickets for the BB&T Classic, to
the $50 End Zone seats (regularly $75). Individual game
tickets are $18
and $12.
Warner Earns A-10 Honor Again; Third
on All-Time GW Scoring Scroll
Womens soccer star Kim Warner received Co-Player of the Week honors
last month for the second time this season. Warner, a redshirt junior,
scored twice in two matches bringing her seasons total to a league-leading
13 goals. Warner, who added a goal and an assist a week later, is ranked
first in the conference with 29 points.
Warners eight-points in two weekends spearheaded GWs four
wins, keeping the Colonials in playoff contention. On Oct. 18, Warner
scored the opening goal and later added an assist in a 31 victory
over Saint Josephs. Two days later, Warner scored the game-winning
goal against Temple. Her goal and assist a week later helped GW notch
a 60 record at home this season.
Warner has quickly moved up the Colonials all-time records list.
Starting the year in 20th place in points, Warner has moved up to fourth
with 60. In goals, Warner is now in third place all-time with 26.
