President Knapp Announces Additional $5.4 Million Allocation, New V.P. Position GW’s research enterprise will be led by a vice president dedicated solely to research and will receive an extra $5.4 million to facilitate growth. The newly created vice president position will serve as the University’s chief research officer and be charged with helping realize the research goals articulated in the University’s Strategic Plan for Academic Excellence, as well as spearhead new initiatives. The additional funds, which will be allocated over a three-year period beginning July 1, 2008, will focus on improving the administrative infrastructure to help faculty members secure external funding for their research and scholarship, growing the University Facilitating Fund and Research Enhancement Fund, and creating a special Chief Research Officer’s Startup Fund to help seed new research undertakings. “With the right kind of leadership and the right investments in infrastructure and new initiatives, I am confident that GW can achieve its remarkable potential as the premier research university in the nation’s capital,” says President Steven Knapp. “Since arriving on campus six months ago, I have been listening carefully to the advice of faculty and other members of the GW community about the need for better coordination and for a more strategic approach to strengthening research across the disciplines. This new position, and the new investments that go with it, will benefit not only our faculty but students who want to share the excitement of cutting-edge research.” Donald R. Lehman, executive vice president for academic affairs, says, “A nationwide search will commence for an individual with the capacity to both nurture our existing research initiatives and also grow our ability to secure federal, foundation, and corporate grants and contracts. By creating a senior leadership position and establishing the resources for it to succeed, the University is taking a major step toward realizing its objective of increasing the scope and excellence of the GW research enterprise.” The new vice president will work closely with Lehman and John F. “Skip” Williams, provost and vice president for health affairs, to develop a strategic plan at GW that integrates both nonmedical and medical research in an effort to foster an effective and collaborative environment for faculty members and students. The vice president for research will report to the president through the Executive Research Oversight Committee, chaired by Lehman. Louis Katz, executive vice president and treasurer, and Williams serve as members of this committee. The vice president for research will be responsible for all aspects of GW’s research enterprise, including strategic development, operations, and regulatory affairs. In addition, the person will work closely with the chief academic operating officer of GW’s Virginia Campus in Ashburn, Va., as well as work collaboratively with the deans of GW’s nine schools.
