Summer 2002
Demonstrating GWs Publishing Prowess
Office of University Relations Earns Recognition
Three branches of the Office of University Relations
recently earned high honors for their work from the Council for the
Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), the Society of Illustrators,
and the Art Directors Club of Metropolitan Washington (ADCMW).
GW Magazine won a CASE Circle of Excellence Gold Medal in the
Visual Design in Print: Illustration category for the cover
of the Summer 2001 issue, which featured an illustration by Darrin Thompson.
The cover depicted many of the VIP speakers and guests on campus for
the grand opening of the Media and Public Affairs Building. The same
illustration was selected as a winning entry for an exhibition of the
Society of Illustrators.
After having recently judged a CASE competition, I realize just
how difficult it is to be selected for a medal, let alone win a gold,
says GW Magazine Managing Editor Heather Milke. She adds, The
magazine consistently wins awards for design, but its particularly
nice to be recognized for the MPA cover because it was developed as
a group effort among the University Relations staff.
The magazine also was recognized for design by the ADCMW. The article
Word of Mouse from the Winter 2002 edition received a Distinction
of Merit, and will be displayed in the ADCMWs annual exhibition.
Gold, silver, and best in category awards will be presented during the
53rd Annual Gala and Awards Ceremony June 21. The show will be exhibited
at the Art Institute of Washington from June 29Aug. 29.
GW Graphic Design also received a Distinction of Merit from
the ADCMW in the Presentation Folder category for the folders
the staff members produced featuring the Universitys new identity
package.
Were absolutely thrilled to be in the show, says Kelly
Livezey, director of GW Graphic Design, especially since the folder
was one of the first pieces we designed that showcased the new identity
system and has generated so much interest.
And finally, ByGeorge! earned a CASE Circle of Excellence Bronze
Medal in the Internal Audience Periodical category. The
newspaper followed Stanford University and Johns Hopkins Medical Center,
which tied for the gold medal; and the University of Alberta, which
received the silver.
Were very pleased to receive a CASE award, says Thomas
Kohout, ByGeorge! editor. Recognition from ones peers makes
the long hours easier to take. This honor is really a testament to the
emphasis the University places on serving the GW community, as well
as the support we get from everyone on the University Relations team.
