Colonials Round Up
Men's Basketball Nuggets
Marathon
Men... The shorthanded Colonials are getting a lot of minutes from their
starting five. GW starters are averaging 32.4 minutes a game and have
been on the court for 3,480 of 4,425 total minutes through 22 games.
Freshman T.J. Thompson leads the ironmen with 783 minutes each (out
of a possible 885 minutes) played thus far.
Monroe Climbs Scoring List...
With 17 points against Rhode Island Jan. 26, Chris Monroe broke into
the Top 10 on the GW career scoring list. At his current pace of 21.7
points per game, Monroe should break the 2,000-point plateau during
his senior season. He would become just the second player in GW history
to score 2,000 points joining Joe Holup (56) who scored 2,226
points during his illustrious career from 1953 to 1956 before
the three-point shot was adopted.
A-10 ShootOut
For the second consecutive year, the Atlantic 10 Conference presents
the Atlantic 10 ShootOut culminating March 9 at the Mens Basketball
Championship in Philadelphia. This year, the conference and official
sponsors bring the ShootOut tour to each A-10 campus. The tour will
reach Foggy Bottom on Feb. 20 at the Lerner Family Health and Wellness
Center and Feb. 23 at Smith Center.
The A-10 ShootOut is a team hoop shooting competition
with two new divisions for the 2002 tour. Free and open to all students
at A-10 institutions, male, female, and co-ed teams of two will shoot
alternating shots from six designated spots on the floor, all with point
values based on difficulty. The object is to score as many points as
possible in 30 seconds.
Students can register through the A-10 Web site (www.atlantic10.org/shootout)
or by picking up a registration form at the intramural sports office.
At the end of the qualifying round, male and female
division winners will be awarded round-trip airfare to anywhere in the
continental United States. The co-ed winners from each campus will be
flown to Philadelphia to compete for the overall A-10 ShootOut crown
at the Verizon A-10 Mens Basketball Championship at the First
Union Spectrum. The members of the winning team will take home the grand
prize of $10,000.
Inaugural Lacrosse Game
Set for March 3
A new set of Colonials are preparing to sport the buff and blue as womens
lacrosse begins as a Division I sport at GW. Under Head Coach Jennifer
Morris and Assistant Coach Chrissy Lombard, the Colonials will begin
the Universitys foray into lacrosse by playing Marist on March
3 beginning at noon at the Mount Vernon Athletic Field. The women will
play 17 games, including A-10 Conference play versus Massachusetts,
Richmond, Saint Josephs, Temple, St. Bonaventure, Duquesne, and
La Salle.
Womens Water Polo
Ranked Eighth in Preseason Poll
The Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) released its preseason
Top 10 poll placing GWs womens water polo team eighth in
the conference heading into the 2002 season.
The Colonials enter their third season as a varsity
sport at GW after finishing 1413 overall in 2001, and posting
an impressive 62 record in the CWPA. GW received 66 votes overall,
second only to Princeton University in the Southern Divisions
Mid-Atlantic Region, and fourth overall in the entire Southern Division.
The CWPA expands to 25 teams this season, adding five
new members. The schools are separated into the Southern and Northern
Divisions, which are each divided into two regions that are determined
by geographical locale.
GW opened its season at the Princeton Invitational on Feb. 16, against
Massachusetts and Brown. The womens first home match at the Smith
Center is slated for March 9 versus Princeton.

Bowling Green State University (192.675) and the University of North
Carolina (193.825) in the three-way meet Saturday in Chapel Hill, NC,
Feb. 10. Devin McCalla was third in the all-around competition with
