GW Celebrates the Holidays with Party, Charity

Presents, mistletoe, and eggnog are all holiday traditions—and so is GW’s All-University Holiday Party. On Dec. 11, GW faculty and staff will celebrate the holiday season throughout the third floor of the Marvin Center from 2-4:30 p.m. Guests will enjoy delicious holiday food and treats, classic cartoons, and a caricature artist, while listening to performances by members of GW’s Music Department. They also may join in caroling around a piano. Each employee invitation will include a ticket stub to win prizes at the party. In addition, guests who donate canned goods, dry goods, baby food, and formula at the party will be entered into a special drawing.

Also at the party, the GW Holiday Committee will announce the awards for the Door Decorating Contest, organized by Dan Campbell, executive assistant in the School of Engineering and Applied Science. A slideshow of the doors will be shown at the party.

The University’s celebration includes far more than the Holiday Party. GW holds nine seasonal charity drives, including Adopt-A-Family and Toys for Tots. More than 100 departments and student groups donated gifts to 136 local families in need last year through the Adopt-A-Family program, sponsored by the GW Holiday Committee and the Office of Community Service. Gifts for this year’s effort are being collected through Dec. 17. For more information, call (202) 994-7224.

The Holiday Committee also is organizing a clothing drive, a non-perishable food drive, and a blood drive. Clothing bins are located throughout campus, and food donations will be given to So Others Might Eat (S.O.M.E.) a local charity for the poor and homeless.

The GW Bookstore, together with Jump Start Group, will support the Heart of America by collecting books during the month of December. A variety of children’s books will be available for purchase at a 20 percent discount to be donated to local under-resourced libraries, classrooms, and underprivileged children. For more information, call (202) 994-5342.

The University community also may support the D.C. area by donating to the 2007 GW United Way Campaign, which helps community-based organizations provide human and social services through the United Way of the National Capital Area. Pledge forms are available in Rice Hall, Suite 504, or by calling GW United Way Campaign Headquarters at (202) 994-7129. Employees may make a contribution online as well. Visit www.gwu.edu/~ newscenter/unitedway/.

Once again, this year, GW’s Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps is holding a Toys for Tots drive, providing toys for needy children in the D.C. area. GW’s Parking Services also is organizing its third annual Toys for Tickets program, in which new toys can be donated as payment for GW parking citations. The toys will be given to the United States Marine Corps Toys for Tots program and My Sister’s Place, a domestic violence shelter in Washington, D.C. For more information, call (202) 994-7275 or visit www.parking.gwu.edu.
