GW Campaigns for a Colonials Nation
By Greg
Licamele
The Colonials mens and womens basketball teams begin their
pursuits of Atlantic 10 championships next month as their seasons tip
off against some of the best squads in the country, bringing an ever-exciting
brand of basketball back to Foggy Bottom.
The mens team, which returns all five starters from its 1812
record last year, opens the season against national powerhouse and Sweet
16 team Wake Forest on Nov. 15 in Winston-Salem, NC. GW could play as
many as 11 games against teams from the 2004 NCAA Tournament, including
Michigan State, Saint Josephs and potentially Maryland in the BB&T
Classic.
At least five games are scheduled to be shown nationally, plus a minimum
of eight games on regional TV. The 13 televised games for Karl Hobbs
squad represent the most GW mens basketball telecasts since the
199697 season.
The womens team begins its season Nov. 19 against District rival
Georgetown on the Hoya campus. Two days later, GW opens its season at
the Smith Center against East Carolina. Completing a trifecta of early
games over a short span of time, the women will travel to Knoxville, TN,
on Nov. 23 to face perennial power Tennessee. Joe McKeown returns eight
letterwinners from a 228 team that advanced to the NCAA Tournament
for the 11th time.
GW will play a significant role in the A-10 postseason this year as the
womens basketball conference championship tournament will be held
at the Smith Center from March 4 to 7. GW last hosted the entire tournament
in 1993.
