Recognition of the awards, honors, and recent publications
of the GW faculty and staff
Acknowledgements:
Jonathan Chaves, professor of Chinese, CCAS,
presented Translating the Poetry of Chang Chi (766830)
at the Washington Area Traditional China Colloquium at GW, April 24. He
also presented The Scholarly Arts of China, at the Distinguished
Scholar Series of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures
of the University of Delaware, April 29.
Homayoun Khamooshi, assistant professor of
management science, SB, presented two papers, A Dynamic and Practical
Approach to Project Risk Management and IS/IT Requirements
Elicitation/Specification Procedure Assessment within a UK Government
Service Organization at the recent AOM/IAOM 21st annual conference.
Krishna Kumar, professor of accountancy,
SB, presented Investment Opportunities and the Value-relevance of
Earnings, Cash Flows, and Accruals at the annual Congress of the
European Accounting Association. Kumar also presented this paper at accounting
research workshops at American University and George Mason University.
Lincoln Marshall, associate professor of
tourism and hospitality management, SB, facilitated Customer Service
is the Art of Hosting, a workshop at the National Indian Gaming
Associations annual trade show.
Christine Meloni, associate professor of
English as a foreign language and senior research associate, GSEHD, and
Abigail Bartoshesky, research associate,
GSEHD, presented the paper Exploring Culture in Cyberspace
at the annual convention of international Teachers of English to Speakers
of Other Languages (TESOL) in Long Beach, CA. The two also presented Exploring
Italian Culture: Voyage to Italy Using Authentic Cyber Resources
at the annual conference of The Northeast Conference on the Teaching of
Foreign Languages in New York.
Akbar Montaser, Columbian Professor of Chemistry,
CCAS, recently presented three invited lectures. The first, Modeling
and Aerosol Diagnostics in Direct Liquid Sample Introduction Plasma Spectrometry,
was presented at the Howard V. Malmstadt His Ongoing Legacy
for Analytical Chemistry, symposium at the Pittsburgh Conference,
Chicago, IL, March 712. The second and third invited lectures, entitled
Direct Sample Introduction in Plasma Mass Spectrometry: The Gold
for Chromatographic Separation in Ultrasensitive Chemical Analysis,
were presented at the Dionex Corporation (Sunnyvale, CA) and Shimadzu
Biotech (Pleasanton, CA) respectively, on March 30.
Moses S. Schanfield, professor and chair,
forensic sciences, CCAS, was elected vice president/president-elect of
the American Association of Anthropological Genetics (AAAG). He will serve
a three year term. As vice president he is program chair for the 2005
meeting in Milwaukee. He will serve as president and past president in
subsequent years.
Lisa Stephenson, director, ESIA Graduate
Student Career Development, received her PhD from the University of Maryland.
Her thesis was titled Academic Success Factors for Masters Degree
Students.
Zhengtao Xu, assistant professor of chemistry,
CCAS, received a grant from the Petroleum Research Fund of the American
Chemical Society. The starter grant is designed to assist young faculty
members to initiate programs of self-conducted research. Xu also received
the 2004 Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award from the Oak Ridge
Associated Universities for Xus research on soluble hybrid semiconductors
with potential impacts on the fabrication of electronic devices.
Awards:
Tanese A. Horton, assistant director of admissions,
was selected as a Counselor of the Year for the District of Columbia by
the Potomac and Chesapeake Association for College Admission Counseling
(PCACAC). The award was presented at the PCACAC Spring Conference
Awards Luncheon on April 26 at the Williamsburg Marriott Hotel.
Information Security, Information Systems and Services,
received a special recognition award for its efforts and superior contributions
to the law enforcement responsibilities of the United States Secret Service.
Several team members are actively involved with the Secret Services
Electronic Crimes Task Force to promote strategic alliances to protect
the nations critical infrastructure.
Dolores A. Stafford, chief, University Police
Department, received a certificate of merit from the European Association
of Campus Security during the Fifth International Congress on Campus Security
at Dublin City University in Ireland, April 1821.

Jeffrey Brand-Ballard, assistant professor
of philosophy, CCAS, published Contractualism and Deontic Restrictions
in the journal Ethics, v. 114, n. 2.
Diane M. Brewer, associate professor of speech
and hearing, CCAS, published Considerations in Measuring Effectiveness
of Group Audiologic Rehabilitation Classes in the Journal of
the Academy of Rehabilitative Audiology, XXXIV, pp. 5360.
Amitai Etzioni, University Professor, edited
and wrote the introduction for a special symposium edition of the Chicago
Kent Law Review entitled Do Children Have the Same First Amendment
Rights as Adults? Etzioni also recently published From Empire
to Community (Palgrave Macmillan, 2004) and The Common Good
(Polity, 2004).
Maria Frawley, associate professor of English,
CCAS, published Invalidism and Identity in Nineteenth-Century Britain
(University of Chicago Press, 2004).
Jennifer Griffin, associate professor of
strategic management and public policy, SB, published Corporate
Restructurings: Ripple Effects on Corporate Philanthropy in the
International Journal of Public Affairs.
Harry Harding, dean and professor of international
affairs and political science, ESIA, published the book The India-China
Relationship: What the United States Needs to Know (Columbia University
Press, 2004), which he co-edited with Francine Frankel (University of
Pennsylvania).
Hildy Teegan, associate professor of international
business, SB, co-authored the article Balancing Private and State
Ownership in Emerging Markets Telecommunications Infrastructure:
Country, Industry, and Firm Influence in the Journal of International
Business Studies with Jonathan P. Doh (Villanova University) and Ram
Mudanbi (Temple University).
