Acknowledgements
David DeGrazia, associate professor of philosophy, CCAS, served as a respondent to Martha Nussbaum’s 2003 Tanner Lectures on Human Values at Cambridge University on March 6–7.

Ted Glickman, associate professor of management science, SBPM, presented “Decision Analysis for Crisis Management” at a National Science Foundation workshop, “Cyberinfrastructure and Homeland Security,” in California in February.

William Halal, professor of management science, SBPM, recently presented the keynote address at a strategic planning workshop for the Air Force Research Laboratories and spoke to the executive council of the Environmental Protection Agency. He also will keynote the Annual Software Technology Conference.

Appointments
Tyra Hilliard, assistant professor of event and meeting management, SBPM, has been appointed executive director of the GW/SBPM International Institute of Tourism Studies.

Jiawen Yang, associate professor of international business, ESIA, SBPM, has been named a policy research scholar at The George Washington Institute of Public Policy. Yang’s two-year appointment will include a summer stipend for two semesters.

Publications
Jonathan Chaves, professor of Chinese, CCAS, wrote the article, “Confucianism: The Conservatism of the East,” published in Intercollegiate Review, v. 38, no. 2 (Spring 2003), pp. 44–50.

Bruce J. Dickson, associate professor of political science and international affairs, ESIA, wrote “Threats to Party Supremacy,” published in the Journal of Democracy, v. 14, no. 1 (January 2003), pp. 27–35, as part of a special issue on “China’s Changing of the Guard.”

Peter Rollberg, associate professor of Slavic languages and film studies, CCAS, and director of the University Honors Program, published two articles in v. 272 of Dictionary of Literary Biography: Russian Prose Writers Between the World Wars (Bruccoli Clark Layman, 2003) “Leonid Maksimovich Leonov” (pp. 212–226) and “Mikhail Mikhailovich Prishvin” (pp. 336–344).

Refik Soyer, professor of management science, SBPM, published “A Bayesian Semi-Parametric Analysis of the Reliability and Maintenance of Machine Tools” in the American Statistical Association journal Technometrics. The article was co-authored by Jason R. Merrick and Thomas A. Mazzuchi. Soyer also published “Optimal Stopping Rules for Software Testing” in Naval Research Logistics, with Nilgun Morali.

Michael Wagner, associate professor of chemistry, CCAS, published a paper entitled, “Nanocrystalline Y2O3: Eu Phosphors Prepared by Alkalide Reduction,” in the February issue of the American Chemical Society Journal Chemistry of Materials, 2003, v. 15, pp. 688-693.
