GW Undergrads Receive Prestigious
Internship with British Parliament
The Washington, DC, branch of the English-Speaking Union (ESU) of the
United States, a non-political, not-for-profit educational and cultural
association, recently awarded internships with members of the British
Parliament this summer to a pair of GW undergraduates.
The students Joanna Spikol, currently a freshman majoring in philosophy,
and Zachary Wynne, rising sophomore majoring in international affairs
and German language and literature, were awarded the positions based
in part on recommendations by Deans William Frawley, Columbian College
of Arts and Sciences, and Harry Harding, Elliott School of International
Affairs, respectively.
GW is providing each student with a $3,000 stipend to pay for a course
to be taught by British Parliament Member Sir Patrick Cormack, as well
as their living expenses. The internship will begin in May and continue
through August. In addition to their internships and the course, Spikol
and Wynne will attend a House of Lords Tea Party, a farewell dinner,
the national mooting competition at the Royal Courts of Justice, and
other events sponsored by the ESU.
Sterling Named Stanton Fellow
Christopher H. Sterling, professor of media and public affairs and director
of the graduate telecommunications program, was this years recipient
of the International Radio and Television Society (IRTS) Foundations
Stanton Fellow Award.
Professor Sterling is the quintessential recipient of the IRTS
Stanton Fellow Award, says Joyce M. Tudryn, president of the IRTS
Foundation. In addition to being an author and editor of numerous
electronic media publications valued by educators across the nation,
he is an academic leader and key spokesperson in the field, an extraordinary
professor in the classroom, and an inspiration to his colleagues.
Sterling received the award in recognition of more than 30 years of
dedication to electronic media education at the annual IRTS Faculty
and Industry seminar in New York. We are proud to have one of
our own receive this prominent award, says Albert L. May, acting
director of the School of Media and Public Affairs.

SMPA Dedicates Media Lab to Honor Former
Publisher
The School of Media and Pubic Affairs dedicated a media lab in GWs
Media and Public Affairs Building, used in broadcast journalism and
television production courses, to honor former publisher of The Washington
Post the late Philip L. Graham. The dedication is in appreciation of
a generous gift to the school from the Philip L. Graham Fund.
We are delighted to be associated with the Philip L. Graham Fund,
says Albert L. May, associate professor of media and public affairs
