  MGT 292.10 - Small Business Management

Description
A thorough and contemporary treatment of the start-up and management of small and medium size enterprises. Profiles are developed on real entrepreneur business people. Business planning, includes case studies.

Objectives
· To learn the inner workings of small-medium businesses by conducting a 'hands-on' business analysis of a real, on-going company located in the local area.
· To exercise innovative and creative thinking through the conduct of case analyses.
· To understand the discipline of business planning by developing a two-page mini business plan.
· To understand the importance of total customer service.
· To become knowledgeable of important contemporary topics, such as family business (including succession), small business risks, new government regulations, minority/disadvantaged/women issues, etc.
· To become familiar with management processes and operations management for the small firm.
· To gain pertinent knowledge of tax issues and legal aspects of doing business, including intellectual property rights.
· To appreciate ethical responsibilities of small business owners/managers.
· To enhance communication skills via formal and informal oral presentations.
· How to choose a business idea to start-up a company.
· To appreciate the importance of financial planning.
· How to prepare for the process of raising venture capital.
