Scholars selected for the Summer 2010 program will:

“The Summer Doctoral Institute provides an opportunity for GW faculty to work with excellent doctoral students from other universities. The opportunity allows the GW faculty and participating doctoral students to share research ideas and collaborate on research projects that take advantage of unique datasets, diversifying background, and state of the art methodologies that are brought together by the program. I had an enjoyable and productive experience in summer 2008.”

Faculty Mentorship

The heart of the Summer Doctoral Institute program is the mentoring relationship between the doctoral scholars and GW faculty members. You will have the opportunity to work closely throughout the summer with established researchers in your chosen field, on a research project of mutual interest within the area of Institutions & Development. By agreeing to participate in the SDI, faculty mentors commit themselves to being on campus during the two summer months when the students are at GW, and to be available for face-to-face interaction.

For more information on GW faculty and their areas of research, please visit the Faculty Mentors page. Please note that any GW faculty member in any field may participate.

To learn more about how to participate in the program, please read the Application page.

GW-CIBER SDI was a great opportunity to meet enthusiastic and successful PhD students from around the United States. I enjoyed the opportunity to gather their feedback on my work, which helped me develop new ideas. I also enjoyed the convivial atmosphere set by Jennifer and her team and embraced by all participants.

Community of Scholars

Build a network of like-minded scholars from across the country! The Summer Doctoral Institute brings together seven to ten doctoral scholars from a broad range of social science disciplines that have an interest in Institutions & Development. You and your peers will live in GW housing, building bonds as you interact in a variety of scholarly activities while also taking time to explore all that the city has to offer. Alumni activities will help maintain this life-long scholarly network for years to come.

Washington, DC Resources

You’ll live in the heart of it all: Just blocks from the White House and Capital Hill, across the street from the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, and near a wide range of embassies, nongovernmental organizations, and multilateral institutions. Other Program Components

Beyond engaging in a research project with a GW faculty member, you will also take part in a variety of learning opportunities throughout the length of the program:

  • Doctoral Colloquium: Doctoral scholars will participate in a weekly discussion forum that will focus on cutting edge research in the area of Institutions & Development. These meetings will also include student/mentor research presentations at the beginning and end of the program.
  • Research Feedback Groups: The SDI students will participate in informal feedback groups consisting of two to four students with similar research interests or fields. These groups will meet several times during the summer and will provide an opportunity for peer review and brainstorming.

Getting Published

Part of your Summer Doctoral Institute experience will involve preparing your research for the publishing process. Through your partnership with a GW faculty member, you’ll have the opportunity to become a coauthor on an article that will be submitted to a high quality, peer-reviewed outlet.

For more information on the research activity at GW, visit the homepages of the University’s schools and colleges on our About GW page.

"It was a pleasure to participate in GW-CIBER SDI 2008. The program provided an opportunity to work closely with a serious graduate student on a project of common interest. Together, my graduate student collaborator and I made a great deal of progress on our research over the summer, and our coauthored paper was recently accepted for presentation at a major conference in our field. GW-CIBER has been enormously supportive of our project from start to finish. I look forward to participating again next year."

-Dr. Emmanuel Teitelbaum,
Department of Political Science
