History

In March of 2001, The George Washington University Art Gallery opened in the new Media & Public Affairs Building at 805 21st Street, NW. Click here to read the press release. On March 25, 2002, The University Art Gallery was dedicated as "The Luther W. Brady Art Gallery."

Luther W. Brady, M.D. (BA '46, MD '48), one of the world's foremost oncologists, is Hylda Cohn/American Cancer Society Professor of Clinical Oncology and Professor of Radiation Oncology at MCP Hahnemann Unversity School of Medicine in Philadelphia. His distinguished reputation has been built on his teaching excellence and innovative approaches to the treatment of cancer. He has received the American Medical Association's Distinguished Service Award Gold Medal and the 1999 Strittmatter Award, one of the most illustrious honors given for high achievement in the field of medicine, granted by the Philadelphia County Medical Society. He is one of the trustees of the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health and a trustee of the Research and Education Foundation of the Radiological Society of North America, Inc.

In addition to his highly successful medical career, Dr. Brady's involvement with the arts has been equally intense. He has been chairman of the Philadelphia Museum of Art's executive committee and is a member of its board of trustees. In 1996 that museum established the Luther Brady Curatorship of Japanese Art. He has served on the board of directors of the Opera Company of Philadelphia, the Opera Company of New Mexico, the Santa Fe Opera Company as well as the Settlement Music School and Curtis Institute of Music, both in Philadelphia. In addition to his long list of honors, Dr. Brady is a member of the George Washington University Society and has served as a distinguished member of the University's Board of Trustees.

Mission

The Luther W. Brady Art Gallery, an educational gallery located on the second floor of the new Media and Public Affairs Building, is the professional showcase for art at GW. Six to eight exhibitions are featured each year and include University-related shows and Permanent Collection exhibitions; as well as shows of historical and contemporary significance, often with a focus on the Washington area. The gallery also administers the University's Permanent Collection, which includes important paintings, sculptures, graphics, textiles, ceramics, historic furnishings, and photographs. Through its varied schedule of temporary exhibits and special events, the Luther W. Brady Art Gallery contributes to the cultural life of Foggy Bottom.

The George Washington University, founded in 1821 and chartered by an act of Congress of the United States of America, is located in the heart of Washington, D.C. It is centered in the national and international crossroads of the world and commits itself to excellence in the creation, dissemination, and application of knowledge. Though George Washington University is more than 175 years old, it continues to generate creative energy, breaking down the boundaries between disciplines, and the divide between academia and the world at large.

Location

The Luther W. Brady Art Gallery is located in the Media and Public Affairs Building, 2nd Floor, 805 21st Street, NW. The Gallery is located on the corner of 21st and H Streets NW. Take the metro to the Foggy Bottom/GWU Station and walk three blocks east on I Street. Turn right onto 21st Street and the Media and Public Affairs Building is located on the corner of 21st and H Streets, NW. The Luther W. Brady Art Gallery is located on the second floor. The building and Gallery are handicapped accessible.

Hours

The Luther W. Brady Art Gallery is open Tuesday through Friday, 10am to 5pm. Closed Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Please call to obtain special extended hours which are coordinated in conjunction with selected events held in the Media and Public Affairs Building, (202) 994-1525.

Cost

The Luther W. Brady Art Gallery is free and open to the public.
