GW Club Baseball History

Mike Schwimmer(left), Brett Kaplan(center), and Dave Cutler(right) met in the fall of their Freshman year ('99.)

Fall '99: Dave and Mike enjoyed a short stint together on the Varsity squad that fall.  The three founders stayed friends throughout the next two years and after playing together in DC in the Summer of '01, decided to take on the enormous task of starting a club team at GW.

Fall '01: With help from the Presidents of rival schools' Club Teams (Maryland and James Madison especially,) our first semester was very successful as we played a competitive 8 game schedule against very established teams and joined the NCBA Mid-Atlantic Conference.  It wasn't so pretty early on in the Fall as GW dropped their 2nd game in history to James Madison by a score of 37-0.  GW Club Baseball improved greatly over the course of their inaugural season as practice facilities like the Smith Center batting cages became available to use through GW's Varsity Coach, Tom Walter.  Only about a month after losing 37-0 to James Madison, GW beat UNC-Chapel Hill (a team that went to the World Series) and was within 4 outs of knocking JMU off  at their Fall Tournament but lost a heartbreaker in the last inning.

Spring '02: After many hours of Fundraising over the Winter, the new and improved GW Club Baseball Team was ready to take the field in their first NCBA spring season.  The team still had 18 of its original members along with 7 newcomers.  Losses against some of the weaker teams in GW's conference hurt considerably but GW still had a chance to win the conference and earn a bid to the NCBA World Series going into the last two games of the season at Virginia. Unfortunately GW fell just short in the inaugural season but there were a lot of highlights for a first year club.

Co-Founder Dave Cutler was recruited to once again join GW's Varsity Baseball program after a very successful Spring '02 season with the club team.

Fall '02: On October 5-6, 2002 GW Club Baseball Co-Hosted the 1st Annual Capital Classic Tournament along with Maryland Club Baseball.  For results and pictures click here: Capital Classic Results and Pictures. The 12 team tournament was the biggest NCBA sanctioned Fall Tournament ever.  It was also the first club baseball tournament in the nation's capital.  NCBA President Sandy Sanderson and Mid-Atlantic Conference Coordinator Wes McCoubrie were in attendance and took part in the pre game ceremonial first pitch before the Tournament Finals.  The tournament was a huge success and received a great deal of help from our sponsors: Cluck-U Chicken, Comfort Inn, and DCBaseball.org. Congratulation to UVA for beating NC State in the Finals.

Spring '03: The highly anticipated Spring 2003 season was marred by rainouts and cancellations. A total of 16 games were cancelled or rained out. Despite the          weather, GWCB still had a very sucuessful season in winning the MAC North Conference with a 10-2 conference record. Although JMU won the MAC Regional     Championship in two games and advanced to the NCBA World Series in Bradenton, Florida, this season was far from a failure. For the second season in a row and  in just GWCB's second year of existence, GWCB went into the last game of the season with a chance to win a game and advance to the World Series. There     were a great number of individual player achievments that were recognized including Senior Matt Ryan winning MAC North Pitcher of the Week TWICE in one season. Senior Brett Kaplan was awarded MAC North Player of the Week in the series vs. Howard. Brett also finished 5th in the NCBA with 15 stolen bases. Junior Pitcher Tom Siek was the first GW player to be named National Pitcher of the Week along with being named MAC North Pitcher of the Week during the week that GW won 2 out of 3 critical games vs. Maryland. Congratulations to the seniors who graduated: Brett Kaplan, Etan Hirsch, Matt Ryan, and Mike Schwimmer.

Fall '04:  The 2004-2005 GW Club Baseball lost a substantial amount of players to graduation, allowing new coaches Matt D'Alessio, Jake Ritt, and Dan Faigus
to take 11 new players by the end of fall tryouts. The absence of  pitcher Spencer Smith due to a fractured ankle, hurt the pitching rotation, as well as lack of
commitment by the majority of the players yielded a poor fall record of 1-8. However, pitcher Russ Singer, coming off of a successful season of summer ball was
able to keep the team in contention every time he took the hill. The team's only victory game against the Tribe of William and Mary in an extra inning contest. On
October 2nd and 3rd, GWCB hosted the 3rd annual Capital Classic Tournament which included George Washington, Wake Forest, Univ. of North Carolina, James
Madison, Univ. of Virginia, Univ. of Maryland, NC State, and Georgetown.
