GW Club Baseball Capital Classic Results
Capital Classic October 5, 2002
Washington,
DC-GW Club Baseball faced off against Howard University in the 1st
round of the Capital Classic Tournament. After jumping out to an
early 5-0 lead, Howard responded and cut lead to 5-4 after 3
innings. From there the game became a slugfest-Matt
Ryan homered over the right field fence for GW. GW blew two more
big leads and went into the bottom of the 7th trailing by the score of
14-12. Mike Schwimmer started the rally with
his 4th hit of the afternoon (tying a club record.)
Freshman Dave Meo hit a clutch 2-out bases loaded 2
RBI single to tie the score at 14. Meo then forced a throwing error
on a stolen base attempt that allowed Sophomore Matt
D'Alessio to cross the plate with the winning run. Schwimmer picked up
the win in relief of John Lovrich. The
2nd round matchup saw GW face Georgia with the winner guaranteed a berth
in the Semi-Finals Sunday at Shipley Field at the Univeristy of Maryland.
GW jumped out to an early lead again behind the solid 5 innings of pitching
from their ace, Matt Ryan. Heading into the bottom of the 7th inning with
a 5 run lead it looked like GW was going to face NC State in the
Semi-Finals on Sunday but Georgia came back with 6 runs in the last frame
to advance to the Semi-Finals.
