Q. How do I join? Is there an audition?
A. All students audition during the second week of classes. Participation is guaranteed regardless of playing level. The audition consists of:
* A short piece (two minutes), displaying both your technical and lyrical ability.
* A major scale chosen by the adjudicator.
* A chromatic scale throughout your range of your instrument
* Sight-reading
The audition detirmines chair placement.
Q. Can I join the band if I miss auditions or if it is past the drop/add period?
A. New members are always welcome, but if you want to participate in the concert, it is best to try again at the start of the next semester. The best thing to do is contact Dr. Fritz with your individual situation.
Q. When are rehearsals?
A. Wind ensemble meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:55 - 5:10.
Symphonic band meets Tuesdays from 5:30 - 7:30.
Colonial Brass meets Thursdays from 5:30 - 7:30.
Q. Are there scholarships available?
A. Band scholarships are technically classified as activity awards, allowing them to be stacked with other university scholarships. The University Band Award ranges from $500 to $2000 a semester, and is awarded based on factors such as: attendance, spirit and attitudes at events, seniority, instrumention needs, and availability.
Q. Is everyone in band a music major?
A. Certainly not! A wide variety of backgrounds, and all majors are welcome.
. Q. Why do we have elected officers?
A. University band is a class as well as a student organization. Long ago, the band was a club, but now it has grown into a class/student organization designed to blend the needs of the student with the needs of the university. Some aspects of MUS 056 are defined by their academic origins (attendance, concerts, ample practice time), while other aspects are more student organization-oriented (“bandquet,” trips, officers).
Q. What is the attendance policy?
A. After three absences, you must meet with Professor Fritz to discuss these absences and plan for better attendance. For Colonial Brass members, excessive absences (more than three) will result in a loss of scholarship funds. We understand that every individual has a different situation, and so, Fritz has a “miss three and talk to me” policy, when he will talk to each student to determine what is causing the absences, and to see if there is some way to work out better attendance.
If you are going to be late, absent, or leaving early from a rehearsal or a game, please email the band secretary at band@gwu.edu, subject line: attendance.
Q. How are grades determined?
A. Grades are determined by attendance and participation. Check the syllabus for details.
Q. How much does it cost to be in the band?
A. Band fees are $20 each year. This includes: a copy of a CD of each concert, the end of the year bandquet, locker rental, instrument rental and various other costs. What a bargain!
Q. Do I have to take the class for credit?
A. Class is taken for credit except on occasions when the credit will put you over the university's limit. If this is your situation, talk to Professor Fritz. We don't want you to have to pay extra to participate in the band.
Q. Who do I speak with about Applied Music Lessons?
A. Speak with the Department of Music about lessons. They control all aspects of this part of the Music Department. (202) 994-6245.
Q. What is concert attire?
A. Men: black tuxedo, black bowtie. Women: all black (black pants, black dress, etc.). Please see the syllabus for details.
Q. How do I rent a school instrument? Is there any extra cost?
A. See Dr. Fritz for instrument rental. The cost is covered in the band dues.
Q. Is there instrument storage available?
A. Yes, lockers are available to students who would rather not lug their instruments around campus. Space is limited and is assigned according to instrument size and seniority. If you would like to sign out a locker, please email band@gwu.edu and tell us your instrument, your GWID, your name, and your year (freshman, sophomore, etc.) and we will see what we can do. Lockers cost $20 and are not covered by band dues.
