There are three ensembles at GWU -- the Symphonic Band, the Wind Ensemble, and the Colonial Brass.

Symphonic Band: Meets on Tuesday evenings most semesters, and is open to all members of the GW community. The Symphonic Band plays one concert a semester.

Wind Ensemble: Meets both Tuesdays and Thursdays. Membership is audition based, and freshmen are not allowed to be members their first semester. The repertoire is more challenging than that played in Symphonic Band. The Wind Ensemble plays one concert a semester. Wind Ensemble members are also required to play at University Commencement for graduating students at the end of May -- they are given extended stay housing for free.

Colonial Brass: Meets Thursday evenings during basketball season. The Colonial Brass is the basketball pep band, and plays at every home game as well as traveling with the basketball teams during A-10 and NCAA tournamets. Membership is from 60-75 students large, and the instrumentation is limited to brass instruments, drum sets, and saxophones (alto, tenor, and bari). All Colonial Brass members are required to be available to play for tournaments which often fall over Spring Break, and all home games for both the men's and the women's teams are required while school is in session.

Concert attire for Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band is concert blacks. For men, this entails a black tuxedo and a black bowtie. For women, all black (black pants, black dress, etc.), without revealing too much skin.
