Bender Teaching Awards Selection Process

The recipients of the Bender Teaching Awards are selected by a committee of faculty based on the above criteria and material submitted. They select the recipients, who receive their awards at the beginning of the fall semester.

A call for nominations for the Bender Teaching Awards goes out to department chairs early in early spring. Nominations are accepted generally through mid-April (specific deadlines are included with the call for nominations), and the selection committee meets in late April or early May. Nomination materials must be submitted to the Office of Academic Operations in Phillips Hall, Room 411.

Nomination packets must include the following items:

  • Two letters of support from the department stating the department's support of the nominee. The letters may be from the department chair and/or from colleagues in the department. One of the letters should include a teaching peer review by a colleague who has observed the nominee teach a class;
  • Student teaching evaluations (numerical scores summarized, comments listed – please do not submit the full evaluation forms) for the most recent two years of teaching;
  • At least two but not more than five letters of support from current and former students; and
  • At least one but not more than three examples of the teaching materials used. These can include:
    • Sample syllabus – If the syllabus is in a foreign language, please include a translated version for the committee's benefit.
    • Presentation slides – Please do not include a CD-Rom with the nomination. Instead, include a representative sample printed from the relevant lecture or presentation.
    • Classroom or laboratory activities that demonstrate innovative practice.
    • Sample of completed student work

Nomination packets including an excess of the above items will be returned for editing. Submission deadlines will not be extended to allow for the reworking of nomination packets to include the required elements. Nomination packets will not be returned.
