Gregory Bateson was born in Grantchester, England, on May 9, 1904, son of the zoologist and geneticist, William Bateson. Gregory Bateson studied at the University of Geneva, then at Cambridge where he received an A.B. in 1925. Continuing his research in anthropology, he lived and travelled among the Baining (1927-1928) in New Britain on the Gazelle peninsula, among the Sulka of the Gazelle peninsula and among the Iatmul of New Guinea from 1928 to 1930. He taught linguistics at Sydney (Australia) University in 1929. He received an M.A. from Cambridge in 1930. With him in New Britain and New Guinea was his former wife, Margaret Mead, "my very close co-worker in Bali and New Guinea", who nas remained a friend and professional colleague.
