Art Therapy at GWU

The Katherine J. Williams Fund

The purpose of the Katherine J. Williams Fund is to promote diversity in scholarship and in recruitment. This fund was established on the occasion of Katherine Williams' retirement in June, 2000, to honor her many contributions to the Art Therapy Program at the George Washington University for over 20 years.

Goals for funding include:

  • Awarding scholarships to reduce fees for students from multicultural backgrounds;
  • Funding research into the meaning and role of artwork in different cultures;
  • Helping students from a wide range of backgrounds buy books or attend conferences;
  • Assisting students in crucial ways to engage in volunteer activities in this and other countries.

The Kwiatkowska Fund

The purpose of The Kwiatkowska Fund is to honor Professor Kwiatkowska's research, clinical work and teaching legacy. Hanna Kwiatkowska was an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the GW Art Therapy Program from 1971 until her death in 1980. Kwiatkowska pioneered clinical work in family art therapy and introduced art therapy in the research program at the National Institute of Mental Health.

Goals for the fund include:

  • The Kwiatkowska Prize awarded annually to a student with exceptional strengths in the areas of family, assessment, group, or research;
  • Educational purposes to support the Art Therapy Graduate Program.

The Founders Fund

When Elinor Ulman retired from active teaching and practice in 1987, her friends and colleagues established in her honor The Elinor Ulman Fund, dedicated to continuing the advancements in the field of art therapy begun by Dr. Ulman. In 1989, she asked that the name of the fund be changed in order to also honor Bernard Levy and Hanna Kwiatkowska who joined Dr. Ulman in originating the GW Art Therapy Program. It then became The Founder's Fund for Art Therapy.

The Fund's purpose is to provide:

  • Annual prize to one student paper selected from among the year's submissions to The American Journal of Art Therapy.
  • Sponsorship of seminars and symposia for professionals and interested parties of the public on the various therapeutic uses of art therapy. These programs will be designed to educate the public on art therapy generally as well as to train practitioners in the field.

Contributions to these worthwhile funds are tax-deductible. Checks can be sent to The George Washington University, The Art Therapy Program, 1925 Ballenger Ave., Suite 250, Alexandria, VA, 22314, and made payable to The George Washington University.

Please note on the memo line of your check either The Katherine J. Williams Fund, The Kwiatkowska Fund, or The Founders Fund. The Development Office will send you a letter acknowledging your donation for tax purposes.
