INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
International students are required to follow the same application process and have the same pre-requisites fulfilled before applying to the GW Art Therapy Program (bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a grade average of B or better, GRE General Test score, 18 credit hours in studio art, 12 credit hours in psychology, and a portfolio). Please refer to "Admission Requirements" for specific details.
In addition, to be considered for admission, students must complete either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Exceptions may be made for applicants who hold a degree from a university located in a country in which English is the official language and also the language of instruction at the university. The minimum scores for admission consideration are:
- TOEFL: 550 on paper-based; 213 on computer-based; or 80 on Internet-based
- Academic IELTS: an overall band score of 6.0 with no individual score below 5.0
Admitted applicants will be required to take the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) placement test at The George Washington University before registering for classes. Depending on the test results, you may be restricted in the number of courses that can be taken in addition to EFL courses. Students assigned EFL courses should anticipate additional tuition expenses as well as a possible extended period of time required to complete their degree programs. Please note that EFL courses take priority over any art therapy courses.
For additional information and exceptions, please refer to the International Student Organization at http://gwired.gwu.edu/iso
Students to whom English is a foreign language may find it to their advantage to begin the application process earlier, thus allowing for English courses and prerequisites to be taken during the spring semester and art therapy courses in the following fall.
