APPLICATION PROCESS
Application materials are screened by the Graduate School Admissions Office of the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences and are reviewed by the faculty of the Art Therapy Program. If the admission requirements have been satisfied, candidates may be invited for a personal interview usually scheduled in March. It is expected that applicants will have investigated the field and will be familiar with some of the art therapy literature before applying. Previous mental health related volunteer experience that involves using art therapeutically is recommended. It is also suggested that recommendation letters (more than two preferred) be requested from individuals who are familiar with the applicant's performance in such work, as well as in the prerequisite courses (psychology and studio art). Please do not include references from friends, family, or classmates. Courses in art education, art history, and statistics are valuable to an art therapist and are viewed as an asset but not required.
When sending in your application, send your portfolio directly to the art therapy program. When you present your portfolio at the interview, you should be prepared to discuss some of your work from a personal perspective. In particular, we are interested in your personal understanding of art and what you have learned about yourself through the artmaking process.
A recommendation to admit, defer, waitlist, or deny an applicant is made by the Director of the Art Therapy Program to the Dean of the Graduate School, who will then inform the candidate of the decision by letter.
