| Turkey's Marmara Universitesi Honors Ceramics Professor Turker Ozdogan as Guest Artist and Panel Participant October 4-10, 2007 The faculty of fine arts at Marmara University marks its 50th Anniversary this October. The University, Professor Ozdogan's alma mater, invited the beloved Professor of Ceramics to serve in the anniversary festivities by serving as a Guest Artist and panel participant. The overseas panel, scheduled for October 8th, is titled "DTGSO School of Applied Fine Arts: Reasons of its Establishment and its Function". The panel will discuss the first graduates of the program and their role in the Turkish industry. |

| GreenGW is hosting an art contest to raise awareness about green issues on campus! The winning pieces will be displayed in the Marvin Center and Gelman Library, and there is possibly a cash prize. The deadline for submission is November 30th. Pieces may either be 2-D or 3-D, but there are some specific construction requirements. Ilya, a leader of the Russian art movement known as "Moscow Conceptualism," has been making installation art since 1984 and is one of the medium's most important practioners and theoreticians. In 1989, he and Emilia began working together, with Emilia acting as translator, organizer, and originator of critical ideas. December 5, 2007 Robert A. Pruitt / Otabenga Jones & Associates Pruitt is a member of Otabenger Jones & Associates, founded in 2002 by Otabenga Jones, namesake of an African Pygmy brought to the United States in 1904 an exhibited at the Bronx Zoo. Through actions, writings, and installations, the group reexamines twentieth-century art in light of African-American experiene, and highlights cross-cultural complexities in representations of the African diaspora. The Corcoran Celebrates a Season of Photography! Exhibitions currently on view include Ansel Adams and Annie Liebovitz: A Photographer's Life 1990-2005. Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden: Meet the Artist Troy Brauntuch Thursday, December 13, 2007 7 pm, Ring Auditorium Troy Brauntuch talks about his enigmatic work and the 70s generation, which distinguished itself by approaching media imagery in order to pose questions about meaning and context. Brauntuch makes use of motifs from ominous scenarios, scenes of violence, and ambiguous situations to unsettle preconceived ideas and perceptions. His beutifully rendered works on fabric and color photographs can be found in private and public collections, including the Hirshhorn, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and MoMA. Troy Brauntuch teaches at the University of Texas in Austin and divides his time between New York and Austin. Wangechi Mutu Thursday, January 31, 2008 7 pm, Ring Auditorium Mutu uses pictures taken from fashion magazines and National Geographic publications to create collages that inquire into issues such as identity, ownership of cultural signifiers, and perceptions of female sexuality, among others. Mutu grew up in Nairobi, Kenya, and lives in Brooklyn. Join her for a discussion of her art and how both places influence her work. |
