Department of Fine Arts and Art History: Recent Alumni Teaching Positions Department of Fine Arts and Art History: Recent Alumni Work Ian Whtimore (BA, Fine Arts, 2001) had recent solo exhibition at G Fine Arts (Washington, DC) that was reviewed in the Washington Post by Jessica Dawson (MA in Art History, 2007). This article mentioned Ian’s previous DC gallery, Fusebox, which was a successful gallery co-owned and run from 2003-2006 by Sarah Finlay (MA in Art History, 2002). This exhibition was also reviewed in Artforum, a nationally recognized art publication. Chris Richards (BA, Fine Arts, 2001) writes for the Washington Post. His most recent article, on the artist Jeremy Blake titled Music to the Eye, appeared last week. Reem Bassous (MFA, 2003) is currently part of a two-person exhibition at the Meadows Museum of Art in Shreveport, Louisiana. Mary Coble (MFA, 2004) is represented by a recent piece in a group exhibition at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden titled Currents: Recent Acquisitions. A number of important artists are represented in this show, including Carolee Schneemann, Ana Mendieta, and Mona Hartoum. A piece from Mary’s thesis show (Binding Ritual, Daily Routine, 2004) was part of Global Feminisms, a major international survey of feminist art that took place at the Brooklyn Museum this summer. This exhibition was co-curated by Maura Reilly, Curator of the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art, Brooklyn Museum, and Linda Nochlin, Lila Acheson Wallace Professor of Modern Art, Institute of Fine Arts, New York University Also this summer, Mary performed her piece Marker (DC) in Washington as part of the WPA/Corcoran DC Site Projects. Val Wolly (MFA, 2005) is currently in a group exhibition, titled Mid-Atlantic New Painting at Mary Washington University. Mandy Burrow (MFA, 2006) had a solo exhibition titled Accumulation at Goucher College in Baltimore, Maryland this summer. Sara Hubbs, a second year MFA student, participated in a summer 2007 residency program at the Cooper Union School of Art in Manhattan. Sara Hubbs and Diane Ramos (another second year MFA student) were included in the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts’ MFA Biennial this summer. Department of Fine Arts and Art History: Alumni Work Erin Haab (BA, Fine Arts/Art History, 2001) currently teaches art to pre-kindergarten through eighth grade at Chesterbrook Academy in Chantilly, Virginia. She completed her post-graduate work at the Maryland Institute College of Art. Virginia Nostrand (BA, Fine Arts/Art History, 2001; MFA, Pratt, 2004) works as an adjunct instructor in Richmond, Virginia, and serves as a freelance public relations writer and manager at the Reynolds Gallery. She previously worked as a freelance web editor for the International Sculpture Center in New Jersey; as an adjunct instructor at George Mason University; and as an editorial assistant for Sculpture Magazine in Washington, D.C. Janna Schoenberger (BA, Fine Arts, 2001 is currently a PhD candidate in Art History at CUNY. After graduating from GW, Janna spent time in Germany on a Fulbright before moving to Amsterdam, where she worked as a curatorial assistant at the Rijksmuseum and wrote international exhibition reviews for NY ARTS magazine. Lauren Silberman (BA, Fine Arts/Art History, 2002) is currently the education and program coordinator at the Jewish Museum of Maryland. She is also studying graphic design at Maryland Institute College of Art. Meghan Shea (BA, Fine Arts/Art History, 2003) has worked in documentary film as a researcher for Washington Media Associates on projects including Peter Jennings Reporting: Guantanamo and CNN: Why They Hate Us. She is currently working as a co-producer on a documentary film The New Woman: The Life and Times of Annie “Londonderry” Kopchovsky for Spokeswoman Productions, which she co-founded. Deborah Hurwitz (BA, Fine Arts, 2003) lives in Philadelphia, where she is a senior designer for Kalan LP. She is also a co-founder of ADHDesign.com, an apparel and accessory company. While at GW, Deborah obtained two summer internships, one at While You Were Sleeping magazine in Bethesda, Maryland, and the other at Kalan LP, which led to an offer of full-time employment after graduation. She has done freelance design work for KB Consultants (a public relations firm in Philadelphia) and A Day In Black & White (a Washington, D.C. punk band). Beth Mosenthal (BA, Fine Arts, 2004) is currently working towards a degree in architecture at Syracuse University. Sara Hodgdon (BA, Fine Arts, 2004) currently lives in New York City, where she works at SoHo for The Door, a community center for children ages 12 to 21. She previously worked at the New York Botanical Garden. Seza Bali (BA, Fine Arts, 2005) is currently studying photography at the San Francisco Art Institute, where she recently won the Paul Sack Building Award. |
