New Programs of Study in Art History

The art department has restructured its undergraduate and graduate programs and has renumbered its courses.  Although the new course numbers are now in use, the new rules and requirements do not take effect until the fall of 2006. This means that the restructered programs in art history begin to apply to undergraduates declaring a major in the fall term 2006, as well as graduate students entering the program that term. Students currently enrolled complete their degrees by fulfilling the requirements listed in the University Bulletin issued the year they began study.

For both undergraduates and graduates, the restructuring simplifies the course of study while offering a more diverse array of course types.  For both undergraduates and graduates, there are fewer course requirements, so students are better able to concentrate on specific areas or focus their studies in other ways.  The broad range of subjects that has typified art history at GW will remain available for those who wish to study across the art-historical spectrum.   The graduate restructuring has introduced proseminars and qualifying papers.

The renumbering groups courses by area and reserves certain numbers; undergraduate seminars, for example, end in 9.  For those making the transition from one set of number to another, we provide keys for both undergraduate and graduate course numbers.
