Dr. Habecker is a development anthropologist specializing in displacement, transnationalism, and diasporas in Africa and among Africans in the U.S.

Research

Shelly Habecker has conducted fieldwork in refugee camps in Ghana, Tanzania, and Zambia, and worked for three years at the U.S. Office of Refugee Resettlement in Washington, DC. In recent years, her research interests have broadened to include African immigrants living in the U.S., and her dissertation title is African Immigrants in Washington, DC: Seeking Alternatives Identities in a Racially Divided City.
