Dr. Cernea is both an academic researcher and an applied anthropologist whose work has focused on development policies, specifically social, environmental, and agricultural policies, from the perspectives of anthropology and sociology.

Research

Michael Cernea has held several senior positions at the World Bank. He pioneered the introduction of sociology/anthropology into the World Bank and involved a large number of social scientists from developed and developing countries in applied and policy research and in operational development-investment programs. He has done fieldwork in more than two dozen countries.
